Frequently Asked Questions

Here is a list of our most commonly asked questions. If you can’t find yours, or would prefer to ask directly, simply contact us.

Why should I choose Scrap That Gold?

Please take a look at our Golden Reasons to Choose Us – it sums up what we are all about and why we are the best!

Okay, you’ve convinced me! Where do I start?

Great! First use our gold calculator (available on every page) to calculate the value of your scrap gold based on the gram weight and Carat.

What price per gram are you offering?

We publish our live Gold Prices on every page so you can see exactly how much a gram of gold is worth. We list the 9 Carat, 14 Carat, 18 Carat, 22 Carat and 24 Carat gold prices. If your Gold Carat is not listed please contact us for an exact price per gram.

How often do you update your prices?

Our prices are updated regularly throughout the day to ensure you are always receiving the most competitive price for your gold.

I don’t know how much my gold weighs, what should I do?

Collect all your gold together and place it on your kitchen scales. Gold is weighed in grams so make sure it is set to that.

What if my weighing scales are inaccurate?

Before we test your gold we weigh each piece of gold to see if it concurs with your weight. If there is a discrepancy between weights we will call you with a revised offer. We weigh your gold using state-of-the art precious metal scales that are calibrated to the nearest 0.01g to guarantee that we pay you for every single bit of gold you send to us. After all, every gram counts!

I don't have scales, what should I do?

You can send your gold to us and we will verify the weight for you. As soon as your parcel arrives we will weigh it, test it and contact you with a precise valuation.

I don't know the gram weight or carat, so I can't fill in your calculator, but I still want to send you my gold! What should I do?

Simply leave the calculator blank, click Calculate and complete the form. Please provide any information you have in the description field. We will contact you when it arrives and provide a precise offer based on the exact weight and purity of your gold.

I know the weight but I don’t know the Carat of my gold. What am I looking for?

There is a series of codes on most gold items known as the hallmark. This will tell you what Carat gold it is.

I’ve found the hallmark, now what?

Congratulations! Now take a look at our hallmarking section to determine the Carat of your item.

I can’t find the hallmark anywhere! Maybe it doesn’t have one... What should I do?

Don’t worry, our experienced gold buyers will determine the purity and quality of each piece of gold you send to us. Simply tell us in the ‘Description’ section of the form and we’ll do the rest, or contact us.

I’m nervous about sending my gold in the post?

Hundreds of customers post their parcels every week, so rest assured it is safe provided you use Royal Mail Special Delivery. Provided your package value does not exceed £2,500 Royal Mail Special Delivery™ will deliver it safely and securely the next working day. Just be aware that you have to tell the clerk if your package is worth more than £500 so they can adjust the insured amount. For a full breakdown take a look here.

I would prefer to drop my gold to you, is that possible?

Scrap that Gold have a network of Gold Drop Off Points. Contact us to locate your nearest one.

My gold parcel exceeds £2,500. What should I do?

Please contact us and we will advise you on the best way to proceed.

I’ve just posted my parcel, can I check that it arrived safely?

Of course. Just enter the 13 digit reference here to track your parcel.

The gold quote is an estimate, how do I know what your final price will be?

When we receive your parcel we will test each item individually to determine its weight and carat. After we have tested all your items, we will contact you with a firm offer.

What if I’m not happy with the offer?

If for any reason you are not happy we will return your gold to you via Royal Mail Special Delivery™.

I’m happy with the offer, how do I get paid?

We will contact you and give you the choice of either bank transfer or cheque. Bank transfers, also known as BACS payments, can take as little as 2 working hours to complete. All you need to do is supply your sort code and account number and we’ll do the rest! Cheques will be made payable to the name on the application form and sent by First Class post to the address provided.

What is the procedure for testing gold?

The tried and tested method is the acid test. We choose a section of the gold to test, which is filed down and tested with a small amount of acid. Should the item not be gold, we can return it to you.

Does the testing process affect the gold?

This method of testing does tarnish items, but we will always choose a small and discreet place to test.

What do you do with anything that is not gold?

We will put to one side anything that you send to us that is not gold. This often includes costume jewellery, gold-plated jewellery amongst others. In these instances we will contact you and give you the option to have these returned to you.

What about the stones from my jewellery?

We take great care in removing all stones from your jewellery. Should you wish to keep any of the stones, we will post them via Royal Mail Special Delivery™. Please be aware that in some instances your stones may be damaged during the removal process.

I have foreign gold, do you buy it?

Yes, we buy gold of any kind. Please contact us informing us of the Carat and Weight and we will give you a valuation.

I have silver and platinum as well, do you buy them?

Yes, simply contact us and we’ll provide you with an up-to-the-minute price per gram.
